Students, Don’t Waste Your Summer!

Tim has a missionary heart for his hometown to love those close to him yet far from God. He is husband to Dusti and father to Nolan, Aiden, and Adelyn - fellow pilgrims to our celestial city.

Summertime is very tempting and yet rewarding period of the year for many of us.  It is when we usually take vacations, attend conferences, and enjoy a little down time.  But summertime is also a very dangerous time that can easily be wasted away.  For those of you who are college or seminary students, please allow me to draw your attention to my friend Don Elbourne who is spearheading the Rebuild Lakeshore project (see button on the left).

Don writes:

Lakeshore Baptist Church needs energetic college or seminary students willing to spend their Spring or Summer (2008) semester working in the relief, recovery, and rebuilding efforts on the gulf coast. In partnership with the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, qualified and approved semester missionaries will receive travel, insurance and an honorarium ($75 per week of service) from NAMB. The church will take care of housing, food, and local travel expenses.

Lakeshore Baptist, along with the entire community, was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, and they are still in the process of rebuilding their church and homes in their community.  I can guarantee that, should you “spend” your summer with Don and the mission-driven believers of Lakeshore, you summer will not be wasted.  Again, hear Don’s heart in his request:

We would love to see energetic passionate students come work with us this as we weld the relief, recovery, and rebuilding efforts to a Christ-centered, God-exalting, Bible-saturated, confessionally rich, gospel driven ministry of hope.

If you are interested, visit NAMB’s Answer the Call web site, fill out an online application, and email Don about your desire to come help Rebuild Lakeshore to the glory of God.

  1. Timmy,

Thanks for posting about Lakeshore. I am encouraged each time I think about new people coming to Lakeshore and spending their summer rebuilding for the glory of God. And at the risk of sounding like an infomercial…

As a word for those considering spending time in Lakeshore. It is an experience that is life changing and has totally rearranged my perspective on many things…For example, what’s the best way I can use my time and energy for the glory of God and showing mercy to the coastal community devastated by Katrina…What in this world do I really need and am I wasting my time doing things that are only benefiting me, not bringing glory to God or focused on proclaiming the gospel to those who have not heard.

I’ve been in Lakeshore 17 months now and daily I am amazed at the things that are going on here…Meeting and serving alongside the volunteers that continue to come in and serve this community week after week…..Tangibly seeing God provide for so many needs makes me stand in awe of his greatness, power, love, and mercy….. Knowing that God is working in this community, drawing people to himself and continuing to grow and sanctify the believers here on the coast encourages me to continue to share truth with the folks in Lakeshore. I am blessed to have the opportunity to serve in Lakeshore, to minister, love and volunteer for the glory of God. It’s my prayer volunteers continue to pour into Lakeshore.
