  1. I’m living with the reality of his statements day by day. It is not only because of the “niceness” of the place, but the lack of real-world reality that we find in seminary life. I would not trade the experience for anything in the world, but it is a difficult transition to leave such a fabulous environment to go to a place where godly living is not common even among professing Christians. May God call more of us away from that place to use what we learned there to change the world, even the Bible belt, for Christ.

  2. I remember that one vividly. It was my first year at Southern. I went to hear him speak at a luncheon at the encouragement of Bruce Ware. It was the most interesting message I’ve ever sat through, though I don’t quite remember much about it now, 7 years later. I’ll never forget seeing the flyer about “Christian Hedonism” and thinking, “What the heck? Hedonism?!?!? Isn’t that an orgy resort in Jamaica?!?!?” 😉

Not long after that I picked up Desiring God. Best thing I ever did that first year. It defined my focus the rest of my time at Southern!

  3. Do any of you guys still have the cassette they handed out at the post office? My copy wore out and broke. That was before MP3 players and DesiringGod had nearly everything Piper for free.

Thats another point. Desiring God has always had the “whatever you can afford policy.” The way they freely give out his teaching shows that it has never been about the money.

  4. This was one of most memorable weeks at SBTS. Right before the sermon when he said this, I finally got to meet him after two years of listening to his sermons and reading his books. In fact I think I told him that I loved him.

The most memorable part of the week was that Wedgewood happened that week. We had an unbelievable prayer time in chapel followed by Piper preaching. Unfortunately, that service ended with a group from the Annual Quartet Convention singing for us. Nothing about them, their song, or their showmanship marked what had been taking place that day.

  5. Thanks for sharing guys. It’s neat to hear the testimonies of how God has used Piper to influence your lives.

Tony, I talked to a fellow classmate just the other day that told me media services were selling the audio tapes for $1 (of Piper from ’99). If the sale is discontinued, you can always special order the tapes (I think) from media services.

You are right. Desiring God is a ministry like none other. It is a wonderful reflection on the heart and passion of all those who share in the passion for the supremacy of Christ in all things.
