The High Falls of the Pigeon River is an amazing place.  Located on the U.S./Canadian border in Grand Portage State Park, it is Minnesota’s biggest waterfall at approximately 120 feet.  Relatively few people make it to Grand Portage since it is at the tip of Minnesota’s North Shore, but those who do quickly find that it is worth the drive.  The only part that I didn’t get to do was go to the base of the waterfall for more photos.  However, these were taken during my happy visit.  I only had a few minutes to capture it because I was supposed to catch a ferry over to Madeline Island off the coast of Wisconsin at the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.  Unfortunately, I was hindered by a terrential storm which landed me 30 minutes late and ended up sleeping in my car in front of some abandoned house in Bayfield–the city nearest Madeline Island.

There is a fascinating history about this part of the country, which I was privileged to hear during lunch with Larry Backlund.  I won’t go into it here, but if you are intested in a beautiful place with a great deal of history, be sure to check out Grand Portage National Park and the Pigeon River.

I guess I should say something about my ghost-like picture.  In my 2005 backpacking trip, I decided to start a yearly deal to take a picture of myself, well half of myself, at a waterfall I really enjoyed.  Last year it was Dry Falls located in the Nantahala valley of North Carolina.  This one, of course, is at the High Falls of the Pigeon in Minnesota.  To see where I actually was, I have geo-tagged these photos.

  1. Timmy,

Great pictures, I’ve been there when I was a kid when my parents took my family up to Thunder Bay. Last time I was up on the North Shore was on my honeymoon with my wife. We made it as far as Gooseberry Falls State Park, Split Rock Lighthouse State park and Silver Bay. Duluth is an awesome place for a honeymoon.

  2. Paul,

Duluth is a fantastic city. I remember thinking to myself, “This would be a great place to do a church plant!” Of all the places in the world you could go on honeymoon, I’m interested how or why you choose Minnesota’s North Shore. Having been there, I can now see why, but not many people know about this beautiful part of the country.

I really wanted to go up to Thunder Bay but simply ran out of time. I had only three days to get all my backpacking and photography done, which barely gave me enough time to make it up and down the North Shore and over to the Apostle Islands in WI. I hope to go back next time I am in MN.

BTW, the first night I was there I camped out at Split Rock and took several pictures from there. You can find some of them on my Flickr page. I bet they look familiar with you.

  3. Seeing stuff like this gives me motivation to get back in shape. You oughta make every Friday post an outdoorsy one.

The title of this post keeps making me play Creed’s “Higher” over and over and over and over and over… 😉
