How sweet the day when Christ was born
When God Himself took human form
He came to wash our sins away
Our death to die, our debt to pay

How sweet the day when Hope appeared
The One who frees us from our fears
He came to break the power of sin
And give us power to follow Him

Oh sing for joy, lift up your voice
Let us sing for joy, the whole earth rejoice
Let us sing for joy to the Son
For Jesus our Savior has come

How sweet the day when Christ returns
We’ll see the One for whom we yearn
Then we’ll look full upon His face
Our hearts will burst with songs of praise

Come, Lord Jesus, come

  1. What a wonderful hymn! I wonder if there is a tune to go with it? If not, it can be sung to the tune, Veni Emmanuel (O Come, O Come, Emmanuel). A chorus that fits is:

Rejoice, rejoice, the Savior has come,
Has come to save and take us home.

For the last verse, which is about the second coming, “has” in the chorus can be changed to “will.”

By the way, I think it sings better to say in the 2nd line of the 3rd verse, “Let’s sing for joy, the whole earth rejoice,” rather than, “Let us sing for joy, the whole earth rejoice.”

  2. Dean,

You can find a recording of this song on Sovereign Grace Music’s Christmas Cd, Savior. You can find it on itunes or sovereigngracestore.com. I have never thought to apply different tunes to it. Good eye (or ear?)!

  3. Aaron,

Thanks for the heads up on where to find the song. By the way, I put a better chorus to it than the one I had earlier.

    After the first three verses:

Rejoice, rejoice, the Savior has come,
Has come to save and make us His own.

    After the fourth verse:

Rejoice, Rejoice, the Savior will come,
Will come to take us to our heavenly home.

It fits very well. Again, what a good hymn!
